Project aims
Supporting small-scale fishermen to transition to sustainable fishing methods - a win-win for both local livelihoods and climate-resilient coastlines.
Project description
Blue Marine is conducting research to understand the costs and benefits of the UK inshore fisheries transitioning to more sustainable practices by developing three case studies to assess the financial and practical options available to the government and the fishing industry. While we are focusing on the transition from high impact fishing to low impact, we need to ensure there are productive inshore fisheries to transition to. This requires a better understanding of a just transition towards a low-carbon sustainable future for the UK’s small-scale inshore fishing fleet. Through interviews with small-scale fishermen to understand their concerns and barriers to the adoption of low-carbon technology and working with an expert in maritime energy, we will develop practical solutions. We aim to publish a report summarising the barriers and solutions identified by stakeholders to inform development of fit for purpose low-carbon technologies and policies. We will engage further with the concept by facilitating meetings about a green transition with individuals outside the fishing sector. Using our research, we aim to increase understanding among stakeholders of the meaning of just transition and its benefits for biodiversity, fisheries and livelihoods and present this on the global stage at World Fisheries Congress in Seattle.
