Project aims
Acción Andina aims to protect and restore one million hectares of Andean forest ecosystems in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. It is the first multi-country, large-scale initiative to restore high altitude, native forests in this region.
Project description
In 5.5 years, Acción Andina - a UN World Restoration Flagship Initiative - has grown from one project in Peru to one of the largest ecosystem restoration initiatives in South America. Accion Andina is one of the largest ecosystem restorations in South America! Today, 25 supported local conservation leaders from 15 organizations are already implementing 23 projects across five countries, working with 105 local and indigenous communities and actively involving over 25,000 people. 5,700 hectares are under restoration management, with 10 million native trees planted, and 11,253 hectares are actively protected through legally protected areas and community management, impacting over 50 IUCN red listed species.Thousands of people are benefiting from products and services that reduce pressure on forests, increase food and water security, and ultimately incentivize long-term participation in restoration activities. Acción Andina is quickly building a restoration movement, drawing diverse participants from local and indigenous communities, schools and universities, government and private sector businesses, and even the military. These early stage results demonstrate Acción Andina’s enormous potential to scale across the Andes, and beyond as a model ecosystem restoration solution. And this is only the beginning.
