Project aims
we will focus on the well-being of LGBTIQ+ and their integration into general society, as an NGO that is dedicated to advocating on behalf of the LGBTI community from grassroots level.
Project description
The Bohato Project was piloted in 2019 and the first phase of the project has been completed. The purpose of the project is to advocate for the advancement of LGBTIQ and Human Rights by advancing Learning About Gender Norms. The first phase of the project tackled issues at the grassroots level in local communities to foster understanding and awareness of LGBTIQ Rights and integrate members of this marginalized community in relevant sectors of society. Subsequent phases of the project will focus on the protection, dignity and safety of members of the LGBTIQ community, ongoing engagement with stakeholders and mapping the demographics of the LGBTIQ community in Lesotho in order to compile and analyse meaningful data about what action is required in different parts of the country. The current situation for LGBTIQ+ in Lesotho can be described by “difficult”. Being an LGBTIQ+ person is not prohibited, but there is also no law that preserves the rights, security or health. Due to that, crimes such as Intimate Partner Violence, Gender-Based Violence, public ridicule, stigma and discrimination are not followed by any consequences or accountability.
