Project aims
We work with transport providers, passenger groups, local and national governments, businesses and charities, to push for better, greener transport. Our vision is for everyone to have high quality, sustainable transport that meets their needs and protect the environment.
Project description
Domestic transport accounts for a quarter of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. With the climate already in crisis, it’s crucial that we rapidly decarbonise. Moving from cars to sustainable transport is one of the best ways to do this. In our 50 years, we’ve had fantastic successes, helping to reopen railway lines, save multiple bus routes, and press government to develop better transport policies. We were instrumental to the £2 bus fare cap, and we galvanised thousands of supporters to help shape the UK transport decarbonisation plan. We’re deeply concerned by recent government rhetoric of a “war on motorists” and The Plan for Drivers. Domestic cars already produce a collective 57 million tons of CO2 annually. While electric vehicles help, they too have a build and end-of-life cost. Furthermore, alongside environmental costs, car-centricity has significant social costs, with the poorest forced spend disproportionately on a vehicle, while those unable to drive are left isolated, excluded from accessing jobs, healthcare, and social activities. With a pending general election, the next two years are critical for shaping future transport policy. A grant of £30,000 will help us push for sustainable transport through research, policy, media attention, and direct influence with ministers.
