Project aims
Children who grow up in single parent families are disadvantaged because their households have less money. Gingerbread will act as a catalyst for single parents to achieve transformational social change and make the world fairer for their children.
Project description
Gingerbread provides expert advice and support at points of crisis and shares single parents’ experiences in policy work and campaigning. The parents who raise children alone are not always in a position to act; keeping themselves and their children safe, warm and fed is the priority. But many care passionately about challenging negative misconceptions and tackling the root causes of their struggles. They tell us they feel like 'the invisible family' - neglected or forgotten. They suffer vast inequalities in the workplace and struggle to access appropriate childcare. The Child Maintenance Service fails to ensure children receive payments and the Social Security System is broken.
We are putting single parents centre stage as we collaboratively develop and deliver powerful campaigns. We do not want tomorrow’s single parents to face the same battles they face today.
Our ambitious project has three interdependent aims:
1. Build a movement – single parents will activate their power to achieve lasting change.
2. Challenge stigma - changing the attitudes that are a barrier for us to change policies and wider systems.
3. Support single parents through trauma – help single parents through crisis so they have the time, energy and emotional support to take action.
