Project aims
Improve the income situation of people in rural regions of Uganda through sustainable commercial use of traditional medicinal plants.
Project description
The objective of the project is to conserve globally and nationally significant medicinal plants, their habitats, species and genomes and promote their sustainable use. Uganda supports high levels of biodiversity, and especially high levels of endemic species. In spite of the high population pressure and high demand for land, Uganda has allocated forest land to the private people, which has contributed to the reduced area of the protected system thus reducing the conservation of Uganda's biological resources. The project , being one of the first of its kind in Uganda’s medicinal plant conservation and use program, will contribute further to conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, including many endemic plants, by encouraging sustainable use of plant resources in a broader landscape. Medicinal plants provide a vital contribution to health services throughout Uganda and are important to the rural poor. Many medicinal plants , especially those which are rare or limited in range, are threatened by over harvesting. By addressing issues of sustainable cultivation, levels of harvesting and ex situ sustainable development, poverty alleviation and rural health, its lessons and benefits will be shared throughout Uganda, where there is high dependence on traditional medicinal plants .
