Project description
The contested parcel of land was occupied by the Kuria community by 1940. The colonial government at that time, compelled the Kuria community to settle a debt of 70747 heads of cattle as consideration in exchange for the parcel of land. The arrival of the first batch of the Kipsigis migrants in late 1954 marked the beginning of the struggle over ownership and use of the land parcel. In the years that followed, violent confrontation between the Kuria and the Kipsigis prompted the colonial government to designate the land as a protected area and prohibited any human activity or claim of ownership. In 1963, the colonial government issued a license to the Kuria community to settle in the protected area. Soon after, tension between the Kipsigis and the Kuria ensued. The latter to this day, asserts that the former’s (Kipsigis) claim the ownership was aided by the successive regimes of presidents Kenyatta and Moi. Subsequent peace interventions including the 1996 agreement between the two communities to share the parcel equally failed to resolve the conflict. The confrontation has caused the loss of Lives, destructions of properties, loss of livelihood and displacement of families resulting into being number of orphaned children and widows, has been sparked by; Immediate cessation of violent confrontations and arrest of several persons including politicians and NGAO officer (Chief) in Ang’ata Baragoi who is accused to ferrying combatants from as far as Sotik, Kericho and Bomet and Compensation for the survivors of the clashes. Survivors that lost property and or suffered bodily injuries that need to be compensated to reinforce their enjoyment of human rights as Kenyans. The project will be as a crucial platform for fostering understanding, dialogue, collaboration and a safe space among key stakeholders involved in the Kuria-Transmara conflict. The project will enhance multi sectoral approach in the project implementation that will contribute to the peaceful resolution of the conflict and the restoration of stability and prosperity in the affected communities.
