Project aims
This project aims to investigate the relationship between socioeconomic disadvantage and suicide rates on the Island of Ireland, identifying key contributing factors, regional disparities, and highlighting effective prevention strategies and policy interventions.
Project description
TASC’s research project will explore the complex relationship between socioeconomic disadvantage and suicidal behaviour in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, where the rates of suicide are thought to be considerably higher than reported. By working with communities and organisations providing services to groups at risk to identify the societal, community and individual factors at play, we aim to identify context-specific interventions that have the potential to successfully support individuals at risk of suicidal behaviour. Over 12 months, research will entail interviews, surveys, and the use of anonymised administrative data.
We anticipate that this research will prove a springboard for widespread – and lifesaving – impact, with potential for scale across other countries. Policy considerations include addressing the impact of socioeconomic factors on mental health, improving social welfare, and raising mental health awareness. Programmatically, it involves developing early intervention strategies, enhancing training for support workers, implementing targeted mental health interventions, fostering community-based initiatives, and ensuring robust data collection and monitoring. Key alignment with NSC: by identifying the factors that may contribute to suicidal behaviour, we expect this project will help address its root causes; and we expect that the programmatic and policy impacts will foster improved access to mental health services.
