Project description
Because of Amala, I changed my mind to think not as a refugee, but as a young person whose thoughts can help to build the community and world." Amala Alumna
Amala transforms the lives of refugees through education. Young refugees face severe barriers: only 41% attend secondary school, 7% university. Inadequate funding, systemic issues, language barriers, and poverty limit access to quality education, hindering refugees' ability to build livelihoods & make change. Jordan hosts 710,000+ refugees, with secondary education access at 25% for some groups.
Over 24 months, this project enables 100 refugee youth to access secondary education through the Global Secondary Diploma (GSD) in Amman, Jordan, the first internationally accredited programme designed with and for refugees. Participants develop skills, knowledge and confidence through a 15-month curriculum combining academic study with hands-on learning in a supportive environment. Courses include peacebuilding, ethical leadership, and social entrepreneurship, focusing on developing agency and applying learning to community challenges. Pathways & mentoring support equips participants to pursue further education, employment, & social impact work upon completion.
Youth Leadership Outcomes:
95% complete GSD
90% grow as confident change-makers
85% develop skills for social impact projects
40% advance to higher education
30% secure employment/internships
