Project aims
To transform lives through social and economic empowerment in South Sudan: empowering women to be agents of peace, poverty reduction and social & economic development. Building independence and resilience through community-led microfinance groups, literacy, financial stewardship, business skills and trauma-healing training.
Project description
An estimated 9.4 million people in South Sudan need humanitarian assistance (World Bank, 2023). Multidimensional poverty and the trauma of displacement and conflict have hindered social and economic stability and development in South Sudan. Those most impacted are women and consequently, children.
Five Talents partners with South Sudanese civil society organisations across Renk, Terekeka, Juba, Wandi and Bahr-el-Ghazal. Our partners are trusted, rooted in and led by communities. The programme works with members (70% women) through a 2-year project cycle of functional literacy and numeracy development; peacebuilding and trauma healing activities and; community-managed Savings Group formation alongside business skills training. This year, our partners will work with over 4,400 NEW members to LEARN new skills; EARN by developing microenterprises; SAVE together and; INVEST in building more resilient futures for the whole family and wider society. Savings Groups are fully self-sustaining and autonomous after two years of training and mentoring. In Burundi, where we have a similar programme, 84% of Groups still operate independently today, ten years after ‘graduating’ the programme.
Your generosity will enable women to be agents of change, addressing poverty’s root causes to increase household investment in education, healthcare, nutrition and sanitation. Your support is greatly appreciated.
