Project aims
To accelerate efforts to abandon female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) among the Somali community in the Horn of Africa by building the capacity of local grassroots organisations working to eliminate the practice to design and implement effective programmes.
Project description
Ending FGM/C is a critical global agenda in the SDGs, targeted for elimination by 2030, but with annual population growth, progress must be significantly faster to reach this target.
The Somali community (living in Somalia and its diaspora of 8 million living across the Horn of Africa), has the highest prevalence of FGM/C at 99.2%, as well as the world's highest rate of the most dangerous form of the practice, Type III. Also known as infibulation, the vaginal opening is narrowed, which can lead to increased infertility and complications during childbirth.
Despite 30-years of interventions across the Horn of Africa, FGM/C prevalence has reduced in Kenya and Ethiopia, but not among the Somali community. The anti-FGM/C movement across the region is underfunded and has limited opportunity for collaboration and coordination. There is little consensus or evidence on what works to create change among this community.
This project aims to build the capacity of local grassroots organisations working to end FGM/C to design effective programmes that are informed by established theories of behavioural change. 24 individuals (two per NGO) working to end the practice will attend a 3-year training programme with 3 modules and 3 fieldwork assignments.
