Project aims
With this project, we aim at defending the rights to land, territory and natural resources of Chilean indigenous communities against the construction of a Norwegian-funded dam.
Project description
The Mapuche-Williche communities in Chile have been defending the Pilmaykén River for over 10 years now, due to the interest of corporations in building hydropower dams. The already-built and the projected dams are property of Statkraft, a public-owned Norwegian corporation. Violations to their rights to development, participation and consent have been constantly documented. The construction of a new dam would cause irreparable damage to their environment and their livelihoods.
The indigenous communities have worked together with organizations located in Chile and in Argentina and they have forced Stakraft to cancel one of the two planned dams. However, the company has refused to cancel the second dam.
To hold Stakraft accountable, the communities reached out to the Initiative for Transnational Justice. We began the legal support in 2023; for this project, we will present a complaint against Statkraft using the Transparency Act in Norway, therefore pressuring the company to cancel the construction of the dam and, with this, protecting the environment and global commons of these communities. Furthermore, we will provide assistance to specific human rights defenders within the communities, who have suffered from security threats, and we will also strengthen the communities' capacities on corporate accountability and supply chain mapping.
