Project description
The central region of Uganda is characterized by its rich biodiversity, unique ecosystems, and a significant dependency of local communities on forest resources of their livelihoods. However, unsustainable logging, illegal encroachments, and inadequate forest management have led to deforestation, soil erosion, and loss of biodiversity, posing significant challenges to both the environment and the communities. This project aims to address these issues by promoting sustainable community forest practices and diversifying livelihood opportunities. The primary objectives of the project include: . Empowering local communities through capacity building programs related to sustainable forest management, conservation practices, and alternative livelihood options. . Establishing community- based forest management committees and promoting their active participation in decision-making processes. . Rehabilitating degrade forest areas through reforestation, afforestation, and soil conservation measures. . Promoting income generation activities such as agroforestry, non-timber forest product (NTFP) cultivation, ecotourism, and value addition to forest products. . Enhancing awareness and knowledge about the importance of forest conservation and sustainable resource utilization among local communities.
