Project aims
‘A golden ticket to social mobility and lifelong success’ is how one headteacher described what we do. Our Outreach Project ensures learners, whatever their background or disadvantage, can access our oracy qualifications to gain self-respect, validation and confidence for life.
Project description
Our Outreach project gives financial assistance to organisations to allow their disadvantaged young people to access the benefits of an ESB Oracy or English Language qualification. We believe access to oracy education should not be limited by financial barriers. Third sector organisations, schools for learners with additional needs or those with higher-than-average levels of pupil premium, are eligible to receive help towards the cost of our qualifications. Learners who undertake our qualifications develop comprehension skills and the ability to express opinions, explain, discuss and analyse. They gain confidence and improve their social development. It gives learners ‘skills’ and ‘knowledge’ - vital to their ‘character’ and employability, the three pillars of work-readiness as described by the CBI (cbi_work-readiness.pdf ). As winner of the Federation of Awarding Bodies’ AO of the Year title, ESB has championed the power of human connection, self-advocacy and confidence building through the skills of Oracy and English language education for 70 years. Founded by Christabel Burniston MBE, she believed one of the main keys to success in life is having good communication skills and being passionate, informed and skillful in speaking and listening. She wanted these skills to be afforded to all, no matter what their background.
