Project aims
Political changes in Afghanistan have forced many female journalists to seek refuge in the UK. While they enrich London’s multicultural society, they face trauma, mental health issues, and uncertainty about their future and professional opportunities in exile.
Project description
We aim to closely collaborate with Afghan female journalists by providing a safe space for learning new media skills and offering mentorship through our professional network in the UK. Our initiative includes six workshops designed to equip participants with the latest digital media knowledge and skills, facilitated by industry experts. We plan to train at least ten female journalists currently in exile, with the possibility of accommodating more if resources allow.
The project emphasizes a 1:1 mentorship scheme, where each mentee will be paired with a media professional to guide them in developing individual projects and offer support in securing media job opportunities.
The project will unfold in three phases:
Outreach and Research (2 months): Identifying and connecting with potential participants.
Training and Mentorship (6 months): Conducting workshops and pairing mentees with mentors.
Individual Project Work (4 months): Supporting participants in applying their new skills through project work.
Through this initiative, we aim to provide exiled female journalists with skill-building opportunities, networking sessions, and connections across communities. We hope to foster friendships and solidarity, enhancing their employability and aiding their economic integration in the media job market.
