Project aims
Our project aims to raise awareness about flooding risks and advocate for better protections, using a community-created play to highlight Fishlake's 2019 flood, fostering social change, community bonding, and mental health support through shared stories and performances.
Project description
We are Sheepish Productions, a not-for-profit theatre company rooted in Fishlake, a village that experienced devastating floods in 2019. Our project involves creating a play that vividly depicts the emotional journey of our community through the flooding disaster and its aftermath. Set to be performed at major theatres in Yorkshire, including Cast, Rotherham Civic, and Theatre Royal Wakefield in Autumn 2025, our play aims to raise awareness about the ongoing risks of flooding and advocate for stronger protective measures from the Environment Agency.
The play is unique as it incorporates verbatim dialogue from Fishlake residents, providing an authentic narrative backed by a community choir from Fishlake and nearby areas. This project not only sheds light on environmental issues but also serves as a catalyst for social change by engaging the community in meaningful dialogue and collective healing. The involvement of local residents, particularly the older demographic, in the production process fosters a sense of belonging and reduces social isolation.
Supported by prominent theatres and media outlets, our play is more than an artistic endeavor; it's a movement to educate, unite, and empower communities to address the pressing issue of climate-induced flooding while providing an emotional outlet and strengthening community ties.
