Research on the rights and treatment of the non-religious globally
Project description
The Freedom of Thought Report is a unique worldwide survey of discrimination and persecution against the non-religious. The Report contains an entry for every country in the world and serves as a vital tool for campaigners to lobby governments for change, providing the evidence needed to make reliable and authoritative claims. According to our recent research, 70% of the world’s population live in countries where the expression of humanist values is severely repressed and where the full realisation of one’s right to freedom of religion or belief is impossible. There are currently 57 countries which may punish “blasphemy” with a prison sentence, 25 with a fine and 7 with the death sentence. Each year we aim to research and update 40 countries, as well as publishing an annual Key Countries edition of the report which contains a selection of updates from the current year’s research, plus a Watch List of countries we continue to monitor closely. The Report is coordinated by a member of staff who also runs a support programme for humanists who experience persecution as a result of their beliefs. Each year we try to raise funds to help cover the cost of this role.
