Project aims
The Climate and Gender Fellowship aims to create a network of passionate female-climate activists in Mexico and Central America that will help women adapt to the impacts of climate change, protect the local environment and fight for climate justice.
Project description
I would like to introduce Amos Trust’s Climate & Gender Fellowship, which will support 12 female climate activists in Central America and Mexico to deliver projects which will help women adapt to the impacts of climate change, fight for climate justice and protect valuable habitats. Amos Trust is a UK-based creative human rights organisation, working globally we challenge injustice, build hope, and create long-term change. Central America and Mexico are two of the most climate-vulnerable regions in the world. Women and Indigenous communities are disproportionately affected by climate change, but their lives are dominated by violence, inequality, and exclusion from climate action. Many of the 12 activists are founders of environmental organisations or indigenous communities. They have identified projects based on their lived experience of injustice. They will have six months to deliver their projects which include providing environmental education to indigenous communities and implementing waste management measures to reduce pollution of a Panama wetland, and supporting Mayan communities living in a Mexican nature reserve to take action on injustices such as only having restricted access to polluted water. Activists can apply for £2,000 each for expenses and infrastructure improvements. The project costs £48,650 and we have raised £25,650.
