Project aims
This project targets high teenage pregnancy in Addis Ababa's Kolfe Keranio subcity by enhancing youth-friendly family planning services through provider training and quality improvements, supporting SDGs 3, 5, 10, and 17.
Project description
In Ethiopia, 13% of adolescent women aged 15-19 are mothers or pregnant, with the highest rates in poorer households. Addis Ababa's teenage pregnancy rate is 3%, driven by inadequate youth-friendly family planning (FP) services. Barriers include lack of privacy, gender biases, stock-outs, and provider reluctance. These issues disproportionately affect adolescents from low-income families, leading to early childbearing and limiting their health, education, and economic opportunities.
This project aims to improve access to quality youth-friendly FP services in 10 health centers across Kolfe Keranio subcity, Addis Ababa. By training 50 healthcare providers, the project will enhance service quality, ensuring privacy, confidentiality, and a wider range of contraceptive options. The project also supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Good Health and Well-being, Gender Equality, and Reduced Inequalities.
Key outcomes include trained providers, improved service environments, and increased accessibility, leading to higher contraceptive use among adolescents. Success will be measured through service availability, utilization rates, and sustainability, with ongoing monitoring and adjustments to ensure effective implementation. The project budget of $8,403 covers personnel, training, equipment, and logistics, ensuring comprehensive support for improved FP services.
