Project description
The high levels of violence that continue to destroy civilians’ lives is all “inter-communal violence”, or solely between opposition groups, caused by ethno-political wrangling and competition amongst the elite over access to power and financial resources and driven by a winner-takes-all mentality that is critical to winning zero-sum politics. The government’s use of local armed actors as proxies to fight their battles, including weakening the opposition
Upper Nile State (UNS) is composed of five different ethnic communities; it has long been at the epicenter of multiple conflicts over scarce resources at the community, Payam and county levels. Long running disputes over land uses, internal border demarcation, and resource exploitation have shattered once vibrant communities and have left little room for sustained development, economic or otherwise.
In light of all these, the project is designed to enhanced communication skills, Reduced negative stereotypes and perceptions, Strengthened mechanisms to share water and land resources, put in place fair traditional justice structures, ensure that communities gained knowledge of justice issues and mechanisms, Increased awareness on role of local authorities to make decisions in conflict and justice issues by local authority and communities, Improved skills of local authority to communicate information and decisions to communities
