Project aims
Legislative Theatre is a creative, grassroots-led participatory democracy methodology, bringing residents and policymakers together to co-create a more equitable society. The LT Network UK launched in 2024 with the goals of developing the practice, nurturing collaboration, and building advocacy infrastructure.
Project description
In Legislative Theatre, communities create plays based on lived experiences, addressing systemic inequalities. Audiences are invited to improvise alternative responses onstage, and develop these ideas into specific proposals. Following deliberation, activists and policymakers carry these proposals forward to their respective chambers – using theatre to spark concrete change. Legislative Theatre is growing rapidly around the UK and internationally, with initiatives addressing economic justice, climate justice, and more. Impacts include the co-creation of Greater Manchester’s Homelessness Prevention Strategy, which won the international Best Practice in Citizen Engagement Award; the Right to the Streets project, advancing public safety for women and girls; and many others. The Legislative Theatre Network UK has launched as a vibrant and diverse community of practitioners, without hierarchy but rather emergent & impact-driven. The founding collective of seven practitioners work in various parts of the UK and meet bimonthly. Activities include peer support, hands-on development of the tools, training delivery, and advocacy. The Network is currently planning its first full year, aiming to develop accessible models of practice, exchanging knowledge and resources, and nurturing a wider circle of future and current practitioners. (The Lawnmowers represents one of the groups in the Network, and will hold responsibility for grant distribution.)
