Project aims
To prevent human trafficking and exploitation in Albania through the economic empowerment of vulnerable youth in Tirana, Rreshen and Lezhe.
Project description
Albania is a global hotspot for human trafficking, with an estimated 34,000 people currently enslaved. Patriarchal norms make women and girls especially vulnerable to sexual violence and exploitation. A small group of local NGOs shoulders the majority of the anti-trafficking response in Albania, with over 20 years’ experience working with children and youth groups. However, they are critically underfunded. This renders many young people out of their grasp, vulnerable to exploitation. This project aims to expand and deepen their reach. Through this one year project, Arise will work with our Albania network to provide employable skills and viable employment opportunities to 50 young Albanians (18-29 year olds), who come from marginalised communities that are frequently targeted by traffickers. This project is locally-led. Individuals and organisations rooted in communities are best placed to provide meaningful support to those suffering, as well as to identify and address the systemic causes that put people from their communities at risk. Local ownership improves community participation and project sustainability. The project is also unique in its direct and unwavering focus on employment, as a means to socio-economic freedom. It is informed by the needs and aspirations of young Albanians from marginalised communities, matched to the changing demands of Albania’s labour market. Focusing on practical solutions that can generate sustainable income, resilience to exploitation, and agents for change, the project is imbued with sustainability, and an impact that outstrips the duration of the project cycle.
