Project aims
The 2024 General Election offers an unprecedented opportunity to influence the incoming Government to end the Motherhood Penalty - the systematic economic disadvantages and discrimination that women face as a result of becoming mothers. This project will maximise our campaigning power.
Project description
Pregnant Then Screwed campaigns for a society in which care is valued, and all pregnant women and mothers are able to fulfil our potential, creating a better future for everyone. We campaign to change the laws, policies and attitudes that contribute to inequality and injustices. We are an agile, grassroots organisation that reaches women across the UK.
In this election year we will amplify the voices of our community of over 400,000 parents to call for: affordable, high quality childcare; properly paid parental leave for all parents; flexible working; and an end to pregnancy and maternity discrimination.
We have developed a 'Mumifesto' of well evidenced, realistic policy asks. This draws on eight years of research with mothers to offer policy makers solutions to reduce gender inequality and improve outcomes for families and the economy.
We have a particular opportunity to influence the incoming Government to introduce six weeks of ring-fenced, paid paternity leave - reaping huge benefits for closing the gender pay gap and increasing the wellbeing of new parents and children. We want to bring together research, company leaders and business networks to demonstrate that this policy would be popular in the business world as well as with parents.
