Project aims
Advance Myanmar wants to support University Students’ Unions Alumni Force (USUAF) in Myanmar, who are resisting military rule with non-violent tactics. They use direct and mass public action to fight the military.
Project description
USUAF was formed by former leaders of student unions on 2 February 2021, the day after the military seized power in Myanmar. They have since been part of organising some of the biggest non-violent protests, including the “banging of pots and pans campaign” and the “silent strike”. With armed struggle engulfing large parts of Myanmar, it is imperative to support non-violent actors with the capacity to organise impactful protests that unite many people across Myanmar.
USUAF has a three-point strategy for continued resistance:
1) Direct action, including protests, creative art/graffiti, stunts.
2) Public action, creative ways the general population can participate.
3) Planning for a free Myanmar, coordination with other organisations, education and training, participation in coalitions.
With the military unable to consolidate the coup, and under increasing pressure, now is the time to start stepping up direct action campaigns. USUAF is having a hard time attracting funding for its direct and public actions, as donors are more willing to fund workshops/trainings. They said: “We have the will, we have the networks, we have the skills. We have the opportunity to have an impact. We need financial support to do it. “ Advance Myanmar is requesting £15,000 to support USUAF.
