Project aims
To allow journalists to work free from online abuse by pushing the government to respond more effectively, police to properly measure and record abuse to build a data set and Big Tech overhaul the algorithms found to drive hate.
Project description
The rapid growth of tech platforms has done an incredible amount to accelerate the spread of information availability. But this surge has brought along with it huge challenges for journalists, press freedom and fundamental values.
Perhaps the most alarming development is that social media has become a breeding ground for harassment and abuse of journalists, with women and journalists from minority groups being disproportionately affected. A recent study found that 75% of female journalists have experienced online violence, many such threats being sexualised and gendered. This abuse is often coordinated and amplified by algorithms. It can have huge consequences - leading to stress, anxiety and self-censorship. It has been linked to real-world violence and has a damaging effect on society, as journalists retreat, self-censor and stop holding those in power to account.
Online abuse will only increase, and the targeting of women will lead to more violence, less diversity in the industry, and less representation of citizens. Change is essential. Democracy cannot thrive while journalists live in fear.
We will document abuses, develop solutions and influence concrete change. The impact will be felt well beyond journalism as this is an issue faced by many in other industries
