Project aims
To develop and pilot a two-day peer-to-peer (P2P) management training that can be shared for free across social movements to support co-operative, collective and other non-hierarchical groups to practice their values in how they organise.
Project description
Rationale: There are increasingly-more activist and community groups attempting to use non-hierarchical organising structures. For many, this is deeply aligned with their values, but still throws up huge challenges. In the absence of the right support, collective management often reinforces existing power dynamics, deepening divides across lines of race, class, gender and disability. This isn't inevitable, but is widespread, as the skills involved in collective management are learned, practiced and improved upon. Rarely are groups resourced to do this learning. Corporate MBA programmes highlight endless ways of coercing staff to follow orders, but few organisations on the Left have coherent ways of supporting one another, problem solving, or ensuring work gets done. Getting rid of managers doesn't get rid of the need for management, but we need to re-envision what this means or our groups will struggle to work together and achieve their goals. This training will help groups assess their current working practices; explore approaches to working together based on their shared values; and develop practical structures they can implement immediately. Audience: Groups transitioning into small employers (1-5 staff), and small cooperatives (>15 members) struggling to work together equitably. Cost: £7,000 Resources could be shared via RadHR.org
