Project aims
Using prominent artists in the short videos, this project will provide vital historical context to the Palestinian narrative, largely missing from mainstream media coverage and politicians’ words. Aim: inform the Western public in order to facilitate grassroots awareness and action.
Project description
The events of 7 October and subsequent war on Gaza have shown that Western mainstream media and our political leaders largely omit the settler-colonial and apartheid contexts that have defined Palestinian reality since 1917. The Palestinian narrative has been predominantly silenced. As with South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle, the public needs facts to understand the context to organise and create informed actions that can help precipitate justice at the grassroots level. These three, 5-min videos will use 6-8 prominent and respected artists and actors to voice the Palestinian historical context, thereby reframing the Israel-Palestine narrative by filling in key historical details from the Balfour Declaration to the present day. The texts are being prepared by the charity UK-based charity, Makan, a Palestinian-led, transformative education organisation that strengthens voices for Palestinian rights. A press release will accompany the release of the videos, which will be disseminated across social media using the artists’ platforms and those of solidarity and human rights organisations across the UK and beyond, reaching millions of ordinary citizens. Each will end with a call-to-action to learn more and simple steps to help bring justice for Palestine. Two further short videos around current war crimes in Gaza are potentials.
