Project aims
As a Community Interest Company, our aim is to enable remote and rural communities to deliver an alternative, but sustainable, process in place of the traditional current model which is normally contractor or developer-led.
Project description
Our proposal is to enable these communities (such as Development Trusts, land owners and sawmills), to own the process of harvesting locally grown timber, through to the construction of buildings. This will substantially reduce carbon emissions from drying (16 tonnes CO2 per 10m3 kiln load) and haulage and will satisfy international environmental targets.
The timber used in their construction will sequester carbon for the long term, as well as being recyclable at the end of use of the building. Furthermore, it will support local economies by developing skills and jobs, making these communities more competitive, sustainable and independent of current market limitations. This bio-based process will also create healthy living environments that will reduce illnesses and save the NHS money long term.
We have succeeded in obtaining 70% funding from Innovate UK for our passive-solar kiln project. We officially commenced it on the 1st Oct. this week, but we are seeking 30% top up funding from donors to enable fabrication and testing of the prototype passive-solar kiln.
