Project aims
The aim is to help those with severe mental health issues to develop confidence in embracing and overcoming challenges, owning experiences of trauma; thereby increasing mental, as well as overall, wellbeing leading to a fuller, more positive life.
Project description
As a charity that works predominantly at community level, it has become obvious to us through both service user’s experiences of local mental health support, as well as our work in co-production, that there is a very defined gap in trauma support. There has also been a reflected reduction in peer support available in these local services due to cutbacks. People who do not meet the criteria to have affordable/ free trauma therapy have little to no options for seeking effective support. This means that they continue to struggle with the effects of the traumatic events experienced on a day to day basis, which can lead to additional issues including addiction, whilst waiting for the help they need to re-build their lives. The funding from this grant will help support members of our local community to receive the benefits of peer support work combined with a specific lived experience element of trauma. Whilst this isn't therapy or treatment, peer support has been proven to show amazing capabilities in supporting people through challenges. We are seeking funding to run two six week cohorts of our Peer Facilitated Trauma Support group; supporting 12 people.
