Project aims
Evaluating and scaling the People’s Transition (PT), a participative decision-making model that centres democratic processes in climate action and equitable community development, giving communities ownership of the transition to zero-carbon societies and enhancing public support for a Just Transition.
Project description
Public support for climate action is limited, and our research highlights that structurally vulnerable groups appear to be experiencing negative impacts related to the transition to a zero-carbon society. In response, TASC has developed the People’s Transition (PT), a model that positions climate action as a driver of local development, gives people and communities ownership of the transition to zero-carbon societies and enhances public support for a Just Transition. The PT’s priority is to ensure that climate action not only ensures a more sustainable way of living but also catalyses local development and economic security by directing public investments in climate action into job creation, community enterprises, and local production opportunities. With social inclusion at its heart, it advocates for a healthy environment for all and ensures nobody in the community is left behind. With two successful pilots already complete, the PT is now expanding across Ireland, on track to reach 15-20 communities by 2025. As Phase II of the project comes to an end, TASC intends to undertake a thorough evaluation of the PT to identify further areas for its development, including producing a toolkit and mentoring for other organisations to scale this transformative work across the EU.
