Project aims
To gather narrative and geospatial data via OSINT, SATINT, and wider media sources. This research is used to pinpoint mass graves and uncover deliberately concealed crimes against civilians, promoting judicial accountability, increasing public knowledge of hidden conflict and affecting policymaking.
Project description
Formed in 2022, Khthon is a humanitarian NGO which locates, analyses, and reports upon mass graves and other war crimes in global conflict zones. Social media and news outlet sources provide approximate locations, time frames and tip-offs, to which we apply exhaustive satellite imagery searches using multiple platforms. Our findings are then meticulously documented and forwarded for further action within the shortest possible time frame. This expedited approach is crucial for facilitating the individual identification of victims, potentially enabling their repatriation to their families and nations, thus fostering closure. We seek to amplify victims’ voices, convey their stories from beyond the grave, and ensure they are never forgotten. Khthon is powered by diverse range of over 45 volunteers, who work in teams devoted to given geographical areas from the Sahel to Haiti, Gaza to Ukraine. We have secured small-scale funding the University of St Andrews, and have collaborated with notable bodies such as Forensic Architecture and the Heart Island Project NGO. Our project is rooted in empathy and a commitment to aiding those victims who have endured some of the most extreme forms of human-inflicted suffering. Through Khthon, we endeavour to immortalise their narratives and bring awareness to their experiences.
