Project aims
To create an enabling society where women and girls can enjoy their sexual & reproductive health rights and entitlements and can live a dignified life through earning a alternative income by making and selling of reusable cloth pads.
Project description
Project Unnati aims at providing knowledge, education and skill building opportunity to underprivileged adolescent/young women regarding their menstrual and reproductive health at the same time equipping them with a sustainable alternative to sanitary pads - “reusable cloth pads”, thereby providing easy and affordable access to menstrual care products. Young girls and women residing in remote border areas have no access to affordable menstrual hygiene products which hinders their overall productivity and hence their standard of living. Our sustainable solution has threefold impact in the community- the local women are trained to make excellent durable and sustainable product to be used by women and girls in areas were accessibility and affordability is an issue, it is completely handmade hence it makes an option for alternative livelihood and it reduces the burden on environment by substituting disposal products which takes 500-800 years to completely decompose. Besides, we create peer leaders in the community who is engaged in the community through story telling for breaking the age old myths and taboos related to menstruation involving both men and women. Thus we bring about a shift in behavioural change of the entire community through our initiative.
