Project aims
The Refugee Academic Futures (RAF) programme aims to support students who are refugees or have lived experiences of displacement, through Masters and DPhil (PhD Equivalent) scholarships that enable them to reach their full academic potential.
Project description
Talented students of refugee and asylum seeker status are confronted with significant barriers in realising their right to education and unlocking their full potential. RAF addresses these barriers by providing full scholarships to students from displaced backgrounds who receive offers to study at Oxford, covering both course fees and living costs. For most, coming to study at Oxford is a big cultural adjustment, but this task is made more daunting and more mystifying for refugees, asylum seekers and displaced persons. Therefore, as well as financial support, we offer scholars an enhanced programme of pre-arrival and on-course support to ensure that they are able to arrive, settle and thrive at our university. Over the last two years, since we started the RAF scholarship programme, we have received applications from 33 different countries, with the highest count of applications from the following countries (in order): Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Nigeria and Somalia. While we only had the financial capacity to offer 10 RAF scholarships for the forthcoming academic year, out of the 63 scholarship applicants, 41 of them did receive financial support from other schemes run by the University. While 65% of the scholarship applicants were supported in one way or another, our ambition is for this to be 100%.
