Project aims
We want to support sanctuary seeking and migrant communities in Devon and Cornwall to have access to good quality legal representation through direct representation and data collection to support direct legal challenges against existing legislation.
Project description
We have 4 main immigration threads that we focus on:
1. Initial asylum claims and appeals for 18+ year olds for asylum seekers. There are approximately 800 asylum seekers annually going through the process.
2. Fresh Claims - This is for individuals who have gone through the asylum system and failed but cannot return to their country of origin. This means the individuals have No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF), are destitute and rough sleeping. We have a housing project working in collaboration with a housing charity where we provide temporary accommodation, subsistence and work on unpicking their case, finding a new path and submitting a case to allow them back into the asylum system. More information can be found here: https://dcrs-plymouth.org/what-we-do/current-projects/ - around 30 cases annually.
3. Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC) initial asylum claims and appeals. There are roughly 250 children and young people under the care of the local authorities in this region who do not have access to any representation and go through the asylum process alone.
4. Domestic Abuse immigration work. We work closely with Plymouth City, Devon County and Cornwall Councils to support migrants who are victims of Domestic Abuse, the responsibility of the local authority due to the Care and Families Act but without any Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) and a dependant on the perpertrators immigration claim. We remove the NRPF status and then look to secure their own immigration route to ensure a positive exit strategy. Not sure on exact case numbers currently.
