Project aims
To provide a free-to-use, mindful, eco-journalism platform for local communities, initially in the UK.
Project description
Seaquer is an eco-journalism platform for local communities. Our 'everyday', urban ecologies are often unnoticed by local communities; we often take our blackbirds, 'weeds', wasps, and willows for granted. That lack of awareness and appreciation not only frequently leads to a failure to protect it also points at an underlying disconnection with nature. Seaquer is a free-to-use platform and set of Apps which enable people to notice themselves and their local environment, building mindfulness diaries and writing and sharing stories about their local ecologies while at the same time generating eco-data to help protect those ecologies: Seaquer uses a number of machine learning engines to extract eco-data from sound and image files uploaded by users . We make the resulting data and analyse available free of charge and provide a mechanism for users to share their stories. The Apps and core platform were developed over the last 18 months and the initial pilot service launched in Maidstone on October 1st, 2024. We are now looking to raise funds to allow us to both scale up our capacity - at present, we are having to restrict the number of free accounts made available - and communicate more.
