Project aims
Establish pioneering model services for people with deafblindness in East Africa, South Asia, Latin America and Europe that provide equal access to healthcare, education and employment opportunities. Use these innovations to influence for systemic social change.
Project description
Sense International works to remove barriers in societies and systems so that people with deafblindness are fully included. We collaborate with local partners to establish innovative services that provide access to healthcare, education and employment opportunities for people with deafblindness and their families. These are often the first of their kind in the region, community or country. Beyond providing important services for people with deafblindness today, they help us gather evidence and influence governments to change their policies and practice for better inclusion. Up to 2% of the world’s population has deafblindness. People with deafblindness continue to face significant challenges, often because their condition is not understood, or not accepted. Research shows that children with deafblindness are less likely to be developmentally on track, or to attend primary school, compared to children with other disabilities. Only a small percentage of international aid funding is targeted at people with disabilities, and services for people with lesser known conditions like deafblindness can be harder to fundraise for. Yet creating a more inclusive society benefits all. We are urgently seeking strategic partners for our work in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Peru and Romania.
