Project aims
Starling Sessions is a global folk community band celebrating cultural diversity in Oxford. We run weekly, open-access music workshops that bring together migrant communities, asylum-seekers and refugees, and long-standing Oxford residents to build social networks and promote inclusion.
Project description
Oxford is a diverse city, welcoming refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants from all over the world. Consultation with community partners has shown that these communities are often isolated, and lack access to creative activities.
Starlings brings together migrant and local communities in weekly peer-learning sessions, where participants teach music from their culture, supported by experienced facilitators. The group also works towards regular local performances. From the outset, we have been shaped and led by participants, including those with lived experience of asylum-seeking and displacement.
Feedback shows that Starlings supports participants to build confidence and leadership skills; improves mental well-being; fosters a sense of community and friendship; and provides space to explore and celebrate cultural identity. We engage over 80 people through our sessions each year, more widely impacting the wellbeing of the Oxford community.
“As a migrant, the pressure of being accepted has considerably impacted my mental health. Being in a place where cultural differences are celebrated and the difficulties migrants experience are supported by music - it's been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”
We are seeking £15,000 in core funding to cover essential costs for one year, including venue hire, facilitator wages, and an accessibility fund.
