Project aims
This project will provide immediate practical and emotional support as well as educational campaigns. Our primary aim is to offer comprehensive assistance to those bereaved by suicide, encompassing family members, friends, and communities affected by suicide.
Project description
This project offers comprehensive support for those affected by suicide in our community. The North East of England has the highest suicide rate in the UK, with 12.8 deaths per 100,000 people last year. This project will take place in our local community of South Tyneside, however we support anyone affected by suicide in the North East. These communities have historically faced challenges related to mental health and suicide, such as social isolation, stigma, and limited access to specialised support services. Family history of suicide and psychiatric illness are two prevalent risk factors for suicide, underscoring the importance of providing concurrent support for bereaved families and individuals struggling with mental health issues in our community. We offer support to individuals, families and communities including workshops for schools, police and health care professionals, immediate assistance, advocacy for mental health needs and emotional support through tailored 1:1 sessions. Practical support involves accompanying individuals to appointments and assisting with tasks. Peer support groups, art therapy, and counselling without waiting lists are also available. The project aims to raise awareness of suicide and mental health issues to reduce stigma and promote access to support services, ultimately promoting mental health awareness and preventing future tragedies.
