Project aims
The Climate Agency Box is an innovative youth arts and advocacy project by acclaimed artists Coney, in collaboration with Greenpeace. The project empowers teenagers in high deprivation areas to develop resilience to eco-anxiety, and to craft meaningful actions at school.
Project description
Coney is seeking support for a second pilot of The Climate Agency Box. After a successful first pilot (2023) in three schools in our home borough Tower Hamlets, we’re looking to develop the project following crucial feedback, and to deliver to three further schools, readying it for nationwide release.
The experience arrives in classrooms as an escape room-style box with locks, codes and secret compartments, leading to an interactive online platform. Through a combination of teacher and external artist-led activities, students embark on a dynamic learning experience rooted in Coney’s practice - Playful Activism. This approach uses creativity and play to support young people to take meaningful social action, fuelled by their passions.
The climate emergency is the most urgent crisis facing humanity, and can push teenagers into eco-anxiety (60% of youth globally) (BBC 2021),or total disengagement (⅓ of UK teenagers believe climate change is ‘exaggerated’ (Center for Countering Digital Hate)). This is also demonstrably affected by educational deprivation, and economic and racial inequality.
This project responds by offering:
- Representative examples of effective climate actions
- Creative tools to identify students’ skills and support effective collaborations
- Guidance for crafting climate actions to impact their school.
