Project aims
To teach autistic children practical skills for climate action through food growth and soil regeneration
Project description
Soil School is model for a children-led educational summer school programme that focuses on neurodivergent children and children suffering from climate related mental health in our community in Southeast London. The proposed school is an opportunity to learn key skills in the area of food growth and soil regeneration. We focus on teaching three key areas of soil regeneration and food growth: the food-soil web, the nutrient cycle (including human nutrition) and nitrogen fixing. Teaching through action means that we also want to achieve the following concrete outputs to help with energy saving and sustainability in our community: to establish a community composting area to recycle food waste and a compost loo to recycle faeces and urine at Grange Lane Allotments, and a nitrogen fixing hedge to improve soil nitrogen retention at Guardians Worldwide Tree Rescue Hub, both in Sydenham Hill, Southeast London.
