Project aims
Asylum is constantly in the news, and yet we rarely hear from women who end up as asylum seekers after domestic abuse or modern slavery forced them out of the regular immigration system. This storytellers' network would amplify their voices.
Project description
IMIX is a charity which provides media support to experts by experience through Ambassador programmes, training and a peer-to-peer network. Previous Ambassadors have appeared on ITV and the BBC. This funding would allow us to expand our focus to one of the most compelling but sensitive areas of asylum - women who have survived modern slavery, family breakdown or domestic abuse, and who are often left in limbo for years or even detained while they wait the outcome of their case.
We would do this through outreach, training and a bespoke Ambassador programme tailored to the specific needs of these women. Using co-production models we would partner the Ambassadors with media organisations to develop new ways to tell their stories anonymously when required. This could include a short film, radio or advising on soaps and drama.
This project could be scaled up or down depending on funds - the main cost is IMIX time and the expenses of participants. It could also act as a pilot for more targeted Ambassador programmes covering other groups which face particular challenges, such as overseas care workers and farm labourers, refugees who took irregular journeys and those who need translators.
