Project aims
Securing the long-term functionality of community water points and bringing water closer to where people need it for livelihoods development
Project description
Pump Aid supports the development of financially sustainable small businesses in poor rural areas of Malawi. These businesses improve livelihoods for entrepreneurs and their families (many of whom are women) and they provide vital service and products to increase access to safe water through pump repair and maintenance. Additionally, they improve access to convenient water through pump self-investment schemes for low-income households and farmers. Our entrepreneur programme involves training, mentoring, and support to repair, maintain and install community, household, and irrigation pumps. Entrepreneurs also sell low-cost household and irrigation pumps (through village savings and loan schemes). This self-sustainable approach results in reliable access to water for Malawians and invests in entrepreneurs to provide convenient water access to communities. To date, 92 entrepreneurs have successful profitable small-scale business across 3 Districts who have repaired and maintained 2,500 community water pumps. This has provided 625,000 people with reliable access to water.
