Project aims
Delivering investigations for NGOs through fieldwork, data analysis and storytelling, Wildlight works collaboratively with a global network of investigators, researchers, journalists, photographers and filmmakers on issues relating to social justice, environmental crime and animal welfare.
Project description
Wildlight designs and implements investigations, often within challenging sectors, gathering information and evidence using a range of strategies and technologies. Our teams have worked on issues including illegal logging, slavery and IUU in the fishing sector, palm oil, plastics, industrial pollution, mineral extraction, intensive farming and the illegal wildlife trade. Since our inception in 2016, we have designed, managed and delivered over sixty original investigations for NGOs including Changing Markets Foundation, Compassion in World Farming, Environmental Investigations Agency, Four Paws, Greenpeace, Humane Society International, PETA, Sinergia Animal and World Animal Protection. Wildlight operates as a non-profit cooperative and we have over 130 freelancers on the books, including numerous freelancers from Global Majority and Eastern European countries. We feel strongly that all investigators should be paid the same no matter where the project takes place because, whilst the relative cost-of-living varies, in-country teams often bear significant risks associated with the work we do. However, as we do not make profits nor build significant reserves, there is no safety net within the organisation during tougher economic times, and we are requesting support for the Wildlight project as a whole so that we are able to operate more sustainably, and grow.
